We actually didn't take this photo in New Mexico, but at a rest area in NW Texas near Childress on our way home from Dallas last week.
But it could have been in New Mexico or Arizona or any of the southwestern states where such warning are ubiquitous:

Where we lived north of Questa on the side of the mountain, we never saw a snake. But down the mountain and onto the flat lands just a few miles from us, lots of snakes. Along the irrigation canal was the worst. It seems the closer you got to the Rio Grande, the more snakes.
By the way, I was born in Chillicothe near Childress.
