The waiting game

I started this blog five months ago to chronicle our move to New Mexico.

Now I am getting impatient; things seem to happen so slowly. I feel we are doing more waiting than actual activity.

We ARE working on our house here in the midwest to get it ready to put on the market in a couple of months. Because the real estate market is SO depressed, we feel like the best way to compete and get a somewhat quick sale is to have the house in perfect condition. It’s an almost 50-year old house and so there is a LOT to be done. We are getting there, but sometimes the progress seems so slow. And you have to spend so much money in remodeling to make money. Right now our kitchen is undergoing remodeling - it's easy to see the dollars add up!

The other activity we are able to do is downsizing our belongings and packing. I have been doing this for way over a year now, but I am still finding things to toss out or give to my favorite local charity.

We will take a trip to Santa Fe in less than two months to look at the available houses in Eldorado, and hopefully (fingers crossed) find the perfect one! It’s a buyer’s market, so we have a lot of houses to choose from and some have been on the market for a long, long time, and some have had their price reduced several times. So not only is there a pretty large inventory, but I think we can offer a little less than the asking price and possibly get it accepted.

Once the house is bought, we can actually plan the date for our move. I am hoping for May, but I think June will be more likely. Gosh, that still seems like a long way off! I am trying not to be impatient as we play the waiting game...

You are moving to the "land of manana" where waiting is a way of life. Not to worry, it will all happen. June is great month in NM anyway.

Oh, I sure do hear ya about the waiting... once I made up my mind to retire and set the actual date it seemed like time simply ceased to move. At all. But, it came, all too soon enough. Sooner, actually...if that makes sense. While you might think you did all the stuff you had to do in anticipation of The Big Day... reality is something altogether different.

In my case, anyway. I hope it turns out better for you, Sharon.

Good Luck on your move, Towanda. March looks as if it will be kinda cold in SF. Be sure to bring some warm clothing. Oh, and maybe some shorts and tank tops. You never know in the City Different.

Lou,
Oh my gosh ... here I am all antsy and overly anxious to move ... I needed your reminder than I need to seriously slow down as I enter the *land of maƱana*. I am actually looking forward to that slower pace of my life.

Buck ~ I have lived my whole life as this supper organized Type A person ... and I have tried to organize this move down to the smallest detail. Every day I get reminded that big changes in our life rarely go like we have planned....I think God is teaching me patience and tranquility .... I wonder, does one ever get there, or is it all a learning experience????

I meant "super" not supper....LOL.

But I can organize a pretty good supper too! haha......

catmoves ~ After I read your comment I realized I have not been in New Mexico in March since we lived in ABQ in 1970. I am looking forward to seeing the state in the spring ... even if it is still a little chilly....or not. LOL

Well... Speaking as a fellow Type-A, my experience has been it's a constant learning experience. I'm five years removed from the Working World and I still have to remind myself to slow down and "smell the roses" and such. And to make allowances for other folks whose priorities are different than mine. That might be the hardest bit.

Oh girl, I think time will speed up as the time gets closer. At least it did for us and suddenly I was hoping for things to slow down long enough to catch my breath. We also found it rough to go from full steam ahead with the move to 'hurry up and wait' once we got here. That really might be the toughest part for you.

As organized as you are, I presume that you've been keeping up with the various industry updates on which renovations give you the most return on your time and money. Our old house was over 120 years old but sold within 2 months with multiple parties interested despite the agent's pessimism and long forecast. That really put our relaxed time table in an immediate frenzy so be prepared for the unexpected. I so pray that your move is dealt far less stress from the hands of fate.

The most important attribute is patience when playing The Real Estate Game.

Good luck with the move
