Memorial Day, 2009

"I have no illusions about what little I can add now to the silent testimony of those who gave their lives willingly for their country. Words are even more feeble on this Memorial Day, for the sight before us is that of a strong and good nation that stands in silence and remembers those who were loved and who, in return, loved their countrymen enough to die for them."

~~President Ronald Reagan May 31, 1982

Your flag is gorgeous waving in the New Mexico sky!
(Tell Mr. Towanda he can get ours up and flying when he gets here!).I hope you had a special, reflective day. (I don't really like to say "Happy" Memorial Day. Is it really happy?)

It was a gorgeous day here. The colors in the pictures were so vibrant. We didn't do anything special, as we are getting ready for a trip this week. ;)

One of my pet peeves is hearing anyone say "Happy Memorial Day." It is a day for reflection and gratitude .... but not really happiness. In my opinion.

You're both correct on the "Happy," and I agree with you.

The other pet peeve I have is confusing Memorial Day with Veterans Day. I suppose one should not be pedantic about the whole thing when people say "thanks to our veterans" and the like... coz thanks are appropriate on ANY day. But yesterday is the day we recognize and honor sacrifice, not service. There is a difference... and a BIG one.
